Kohler GP77886 vs GP876851: square stem or round stem cap
Both are Kohler mixer caps, and Kohler lists the same pressure balancing unit, 500520, behind each. GP77886 has a square brass stem and serves older Coralais K-15700 and K-15701 valves. GP876851 pairs the round-stem GP77759 cap with the GP800820 unit for K-304 valves. Stem shape decides.

Take off any adaptor. Kohler's identification tool first asks whether an adaptor sits on the end of the stem. If one does, take out its screw if there is one and slide it off. Both caps are judged on the bare stem.
Square or round. A square stem points to the Coralais branch and GP77886. A round splined stem points to the GP77759 cap that GP876851 contains. This one look separates the two parts.
Square stem: check color. Brass means K-15700 or K-15701, and the GP77886 cap. Black or gray means the K-15877, which takes GP71969. Silver means K-15153 or K-15155, which take a cartridge, not a mixer cap.
Round stem: cap and screws. A black plastic cap held by two screws is a K-304, K-305 or K-11748, served by GP876851. A brass cap on a round stem is an early K-304; Kohler Assist says a new unit in the three-ribbed stem model needs GP876851. Four or six screws mean other valves.
Count splines if round. Catalogs list the round GP77759 stem at 19 points. A square stem has no splines to count, and Everbilt sells its GP77886 replacement as a square broach.
Cap only or kit. GP77886 is the cap alone. GP876851 includes the unit. On a Coralais valve where the unit also needs replacing, Kohler's matching kit is 77885, which adds GP500520 to GP77886.
What does not tell them apart
The pressure balancing unit. Kohler lists 500520 behind the 77886 cap on Coralais valves and behind the 77759 cap on K-304 type valves, and says GP800820 replaces GP500520.
Body, plate, collar and screw numbers. Kohler's Coralais sheet and its Fairfax Rite-Temp sheet print the same 78399 body, 78722 plate, 79478 collar and 21980 screw.
A brass stem. Both stems are brass, so color does not separate these two; shape does.

Where the sources disagree, the figure is left off until it is settled.
Overall length and cap diameter. Catalogs and listings give overlapping and conflicting figures for both caps, so none is printed and size is not used as a tell.
A Kohler screw count for the 77886 cap. Kohler's tool asks about screws only on round-stem valves. The table states only what the FourHome box holds.
Whether Kohler names GP800820 for Coralais valves. Its Coralais sheets print 500520; this page repeats only that GP800820 replaces GP500520.
Sterling numbers. Retailers tie them to the unit only, and no Kohler or Sterling document was opened that confirms them.
