Where it goes
Pfister's spec sheet calls it a multi-handle tub and shower valve seat for use with compression stems.
Pfister's sheets for the 910-374 shower stem and the 910-385 and 910-022 diverter stems each say to order seat 970-5000 separately.
Pfister's parts lists carry 970-5000 for two discontinued three-handle trim kits: G01-9110, and 001-8CPC, a 01 Series trim for the 01-31XA valve body.
Parts sellers also list it for two-handle tub and shower valves. One parts catalog lists it for Series 1 and Series 3, and Braxton Harris lists its 21/32 in. x 18 seat for Verve, Windsor and Marquis shower valves. No Pfister document was found that names a two-handle model.
Confirm it is your part
The seat is a short threaded insert down in the valve pocket. It shows once the stem is out, and it has a wrench opening through the middle. It is a separate piece, not part of the stem.
Measure across the threads. This seat reads 21/32 in. A reading of 1/2 in. means it is one of the smaller seats listed below.
Count the threads with a pitch gauge. This seat is 18 per inch. The 1/2 in. seats are 20 or 24 per inch.
Compare the shape to Pfister's drawing: a straight threaded section with a wider tapered skirt at one end.
Check the stem that came out above it. Pfister's sheets for the 910-374 stem and the 910-385 and 910-022 diverter stems all call for seat 970-5000.
Count the handles. Each compression stem closes on its own seat, so a three-handle valve can have one under the hot stem, one under the cold and one under the diverter.
Look-alikes
Pfister 970-510 seat
Why it gets confusedSame maker, one digit apart. Danco's #39 page for this smaller seat prints 970-500 as the number it replaces.
How to tell970-510 is 1/2 in. x 20 thread. Pfister titles its sheet Roman Tub Valve Seats, and Braxton Harris lists it for kitchen and lavatory faucets. 970-500 is 21/32 in. x 18. Match the thread, not the number on the card.
Sayco 1/2 in. x 20 seat (Danco #113)
Why it gets confusedAnother threaded tub and shower seat, sold in the same packs and bins.
How to tellDanco lists the Sayco seat at 1/2 in. thread diameter, 20 threads. This seat is 21/32 in. across the threads, 18 per inch.
American Standard 57281-07 seat (Danco #44)
Why it gets confusedSimilar look, and usually ordered by faucet brand rather than by measurement.
How to tellDanco lists it at 1/2 in. thread diameter, 20 threads. This seat is 21/32 in. across the threads, 18 per inch.
Sterling 369X seat (Danco #18)
Why it gets confusedAnother small threaded seat that gets matched by eye.
How to tellDanco lists it at 1/2 in. thread diameter, 24 threads. A pitch gauge reads 24 on the Sterling seat and 18 on this one.

Seat height and the diameter across the skirt. Catalogs and listings disagree on both, so no figure is printed.
Wrench opening shape and size. Pfister's sheet and the replacement's listing describe it differently. Try the seat wrench in the old seat.
LASCO, Kissler and ProPlus numbers. No page was found that names both the number and 970-500.
Two-handle model numbers and year breaks. No Pfister document was found that gives them.
Finish of the genuine seat. Sellers describe it differently.
Field notes
Pfister's sheets for the 910-374, 910-385 and 910-022 stems each say to order seat 970-5000 separately, so a new one of these stems does not bring a new seat.
Pfister's 001-8CPC parts list carries the 910-0300 ceramic disc cartridge and the 970-5000 seat together. The 910-022 diverter stem is a compression stem and its sheet calls for this seat.
FourHome replacement
The FourHome replacement for Pfister 970-500 ships as ten brass seats with a 21/32 in. x 18 thread; a seat wrench, stem washers and thread sealant are not in the pack.
