Moen 1225 vs 1200 vs 1222: which cartridge is in your valve

Moen 1225, 1200 and 1222 are single-handle cartridges, and Moen sells one puller, 104421, for all three. Of these three, on a single-handle tub and shower valve, a handle that only rotates points to the 1222; one that pulls out, to a 1225 or 1200. A brass shell is the 1200, clear plastic the 1225.

Tell them apart in the hand

  1. Work the handle first. Of these three, a tub and shower handle that only rotates, with no volume control, points to the 1222 (Posi-Temp); one that pulls out for flow and turns for temperature, to a 1225 or 1200. Moen's shower guide also lists M-Core cartridges: rotate-only 1212, push-pull 1213.
  2. Mind the two-handle exception. Moen's shower guide also lists a 1200 behind the upper, rotate-only handle of 3320 and 3330 transfer valves made before 2007. That handle diverts water between outlets. On a single-handle valve, the rotate-only test still points to the 1222 of these three.
  3. Look at the shell. Brass all over is the 1200; Moen puts brass in the part name. A clear plastic body with a brass stem inside is the 1225, as one parts seller describes it. Moen's 1225 article refers to its plastic tabs.
  4. Look for H and C. Moen's 1222 article has an H and C tab on the cartridge that sits flush with the valve body, plus an oval rubber grommet on each side. Moen's 1225 article has plastic tabs that center on valve body slots at 12 and 6 o'clock instead.
  5. Check the shell seals. Moen's 92451 kit guide for the 1225 places two grommets in recesses on the shell, two large O-rings on the shell and two small O-rings on the stem. Moen's 1222 article names an oval rubber grommet on each side, and Moen's Posi-Temp parts sheet lists O-rings for the 1222 as well, so grommets alone do not settle it. The H and C tab does.
  6. Read the faucet's parts sheet. If the Moen sheet for your model prints Replacement Cartridge 1200 or 1225, either number fits that valve. The Posi-Temp sheet prints 1222 with retainer clip 96914. One parts seller states the 1222 does not swap with the 1225 or 1200.
