Moen 1222 and 1222B Posi-Temp single-handle cartridge
Moen's 1222 is the cartridge in its single-handle Posi-Temp tub and shower valves. Moen calls the valve rotate only and pressure balanced, with no volume control. Moen's store lists 1222B as the bulk packed version.
Schematic, not to scale. It shows only the features named on this page. No bench photo of this part yet.

Where it goes
Moen's service article is titled for the 1222 on single-handle Posi-Temp showers. Moen's 2570 parts sheet gives the 1222 as the cartridge for valves 2510, 2520, 2570, 2580 and 2590, and for the 623xx numbers listed with them.
Moen's 2570 parts sheet is titled for the Posi-Temp single-handle tub/shower valve, and its second page for the Chateau Posi-Temp valve. Both list the 1222 as the replacement cartridge.
Moen's leaking-shower guide recognizes a Posi-Temp valve by a rotate-only handle and a back escutcheon plate with screws at 2:00 and 7:00. Moen's Moentrol guide gives the same screw positions, so handle motion is the test.
Confirm it is your part
Check how the handle moves. Moen describes Posi-Temp as rotate only, pressure balanced, with no volume control. A handle that pulls out for flow belongs to a push-pull valve, such as the 1225 family.
Look at the escutcheon screws. Moen gives 2:00 and 7:00 for both Posi-Temp and Moentrol, so the screws do not separate them. Handle motion does.
The retainer clip is a separate Moen part, 96914, not part of the cartridge. Moen's 1222 article places it at the top of the valve body. The 1225 also uses a clip, so the clip does not separate them.
Look at the stem. Moen's 1222 article refers to its notched side. Moen's 1225 article also describes a small notch on its stem, so the notch does not separate them.
Look for the H and C tab on the cartridge. Moen's 1222 article refers to it.
Look for oval rubber grommets, one on each side of the cartridge. Moen says they are not permanently affixed and may fall off.
Look-alikes
Moen 1225
Why it gets confusedMoen single-handle shower cartridges. The 1225 is held by a retainer clip.
How to tellHandle motion. Moen lists the 1225 under push-pull valves: the handle pulls out for flow and turns for temperature. Posi-Temp only rotates.
Moen 1212 (M-Core 2 Series)
Why it gets confusedAlso a rotate-only, pressure balanced shower cartridge with no volume control.
How to tellMoen lists the 1212 under M-Core valves, with temperature indicators on the trim. Moen says the M-Core flow cartridge ships with the trim kit, while Posi-Temp and Moentrol cartridges ship with the valve.
Moen 1224
Why it gets confusedOne digit away from 1222, and also a Moen shower cartridge.
How to tellCount the handles. Moen lists the 1224 for two-handle showers and for three-handle showers with a diverter. Moen's faucet guide gives a retainer nut for it. The 1222 serves a single-handle valve and is held by a clip.

Field notes
Moen's Posi-Temp parts sheet lists the retainer clip as 96914, a separate part number from the replacement cartridge 1222.
Moen says the Posi-Temp cartridge comes with the valve, not with the trim kit.
FourHome replacement
The FourHome replacement for Moen 1222 ships as one cartridge and one removal tool; the retainer clip, handle and escutcheon are not included, and Moen sells the clip separately.
